Description

The Battle of Mu'tah stands as one of the most remarkable and instructive episodes in Islamic history — a moment when outmatched Muslim soldiers demonstrated that courage rooted in faith can never truly be defeated. In the year 8 AH, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ dispatched an army of 3,000 Muslims toward the region of Mu'tah in modern-day Jordan, where they were to face a combined force of the Roman Empire and their Arab allies numbering in the tens of thousands. The disparity in numbers was staggering. The disparity in weapons was overwhelming. Yet the Muslims did not waver. The Prophet ﷺ appointed three leaders for the army in succession, each named should the one before him fall. The first commander, Zayd ibn Harithah — the beloved adopted son of the Prophet ﷺ — fought until he became a martyr, clutching the banner of Islam until his last breath. After him, Ja'far ibn Abi Talib — the cousin of the Prophet ﷺ, whose courage in battle was matched only by the beauty of his faith — fought on until both his arms were cut away, whereupon he held the banner with his bleeding stumps until he too was granted martyrdom. He was later described by the Prophet ﷺ as flying in Paradise with wings of gold. Then Abdullah ibn Rawahah took the banner — and he too fell as a martyr in the way of Allah. In the chaos that followed, it was Khalid ibn Al-Walid — still new to Islam, but already among the greatest military minds of the age — who took command. Through remarkable tactical ingenuity, he reorganized the Muslim ranks, created the impression of fresh reinforcements arriving, and led a strategic withdrawal that preserved the army and returned them safely to Madinah. The Muslims had not conquered Mu'tah — but they had demonstrated something more enduring: that the people of faith do not break. The Battle of Mu'tah teaches young readers:• True bravery is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to stand firm for what is right despite it• Leadership, teamwork, and unwavering trust in Allah are more powerful than any army• Martyrdom in the way of Allah is the highest honor• Wisdom and creative thinking — inspired by Khalid ibn Al-Walid's legendary command — can turn adversity into dignityAuthored by scholars from Al-Azhar University and Cairo University, this book brings authentic Islamic history to life for young readers with a narrative that is both historically grounded and spiritually inspiring.
