Eid al-Adha Duas
It's Eid morning. You're getting ready. New clothes. Excitement in the air. Children buzzing around. Time for Eid prayer.
But you pause. "What dua should I make today? Is there a specific Eid dua? What do I say at the prayer ground? After sacrifice? Throughout the celebration?"
You've memorized Ramadan duas. But Eid al-Adha? Unclear.
Or maybe you're at the prayer ground. Everyone's saying "Allahu Akbar" repeatedly. You join in. But you wonder: "Am I doing this right? Is there more I should be saying?"
I remember my first Eid al-Adha as someone who actually cared about doing things correctly. I knew to make takbeer. But beyond "Allahu Akbar," I had no idea what duas to make.
I watched others. Some reciting Arabic I didn't understand. Some just silent. Some making dua in their language.
I wanted to do it right. Not just go through motions. But actually connect. Actually worship through dua.
That Eid, I researched. Asked scholars. Learned the authentic duas for Eid al-Adha.
Let me share what I learned. The duas for this blessed day. From waking up to going to sleep. The authentic ones. The recommended ones. The ones that make your Eid worship complete.
Because Eid isn't just celebration. It's worship. And worship includes dua.
The Takbeer: The Essence of Eid ul Adha
Takbeer Defined:
Reciting "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is Great).
Takbeer Begins From:
Fajr on the Day of Arafat until Asr of the 13th Dhul Hijjah.
That's Five Days:
- 9th Dhul Hijjah (Arafat day)
- 10th (Eid day)
- 11th, 12th, 13th (Days of Tashriq)
How Often:
- After every fard (obligatory) prayer
- While walking to Eid prayer
- In the place of Eid prayer
- Throughout the day
- Anywhere in the streets, home, etc.
For Men:
Recite loudly.
For Women:
Recite softly.
The Takbeer Wording:
Version 1 (Most Common):
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd."
Translation:
"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah. Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Allah belongs all praise."
Version 2 (Also Authentic):
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd."
(Three "Allahu Akbar" at the start instead of two.)
Version 3 (Extended):
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer."
Translation:
"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs dominion and praise, and He is capable of all things."
All Three Are Valid:
Whichever one suits you better. You can also alternate between them.
As Dr. Ahmed put it to me, "The takbeer is what gives the atmosphere of Eid. When you hear the 'Allahu Akbar' being called out everywhere, you know it is Eid time. Be bold and say it aloud (men). Remember Allah."
Morning of Eid: Before Leaving Home
1. Wake Up Early
Make dua upon waking:
"Alhamdulillahi alladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur."
Translation:
"All praise is to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the resurrection."
2. Make Ghusl (Take Bath)
Very Sunnah:
The Prophet used to make ghusl for both Eids.
While Bathing:
"Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlika."
(O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.)
3. Wear Best Clothes
The Sunnah:
Wear your best, cleanest clothes. New if possible.
As You Dress:
"Alhamdulillahi alladhi kasani hadha ath-thawba wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah."
Translation:
"All praise is to Allah who has clothed me with this garment and provided it for me, with no power or might from myself."
4. Apply Perfume (Men)
Recommended:
Men should apply perfume before going to Eid prayer.
As You Apply:
"Allahumma aj'alni min at-tayyibeen."
(O Allah, make me among those who are pure.)
5. Dates Consumption (Prior to the Prayer of Eid al-Fitr, Post-prayer during Eid al-Adha)
In case of Eid al-Adha:
The Prophet would not eat anything before offering the sacrifice and performing the prayer of Eid.
However, if there is any health-related need for consumption, it is allowed.
What to Do if One Eats:
"Bismillah, Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana."
(In the name of Allah, O Allah bless us in what You have provided.)
Fatima explained that "Initially I would have breakfast before Eid al-Adha but then I came to know that it is not sunnah and one should wait till after sacrifice. This made me wait for it and gave my sacrifice more significance because my first meal was from the meat of Qurbani."
On the Way to Eid Prayer
The Route
Sunnah:
Go to Eid prayer by one route, return by another.
While Walking:
Recite takbeer loudly (men) or softly (women).
The Dua
General Dua for Travel:
"Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina la-munqalibun."
Translation:
"Glory to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our efforts). And verily, to our Lord we indeed are to return."
The Takbeer
Keep repeating the takbeer:
"Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, la ilaha illallah. Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd."
Feel the Words:
Allah IS the greatest. Greater than your problems. Your fears. Your struggles. Let that reality fill you.
According to Ahmed, “Going out for the Eid prayer, saying takbir among many Muslims who are doing the same, the unity and solidarity you feel, announcing the greatness of Allah; it’s really amazing! “I used to travel in my car, but nowadays I always walk when possible.”
At the Eid Prayer Ground
On Arrival
On Entering:
“Allahumma aftah abwaba rahmatika.”
(O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.)
While Waiting
Takbeer. Dhikr. Spiritual alertness.
Eid Prayer
In Prayer:
Two rak'ah with extra takbeers.
After the Prayer:
The imam gives the khutbah (sermon). Listen attentively.
After the Khutbah
Make Dua:
This is an accepted time for dua.
What to Ask For:
"Rabbana taqabbal minna innaka anta as-Sami'ul-'Aleem."
(Our Lord, accept from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.)
"Allahumma taqabbal minna hadha al-'Eid, waj'alhu Eidan mubarak."
(O Allah, accept from us this Eid, and make it a blessed Eid.)
"Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni."
(O Allah, You are Pardoning and You love to pardon, so pardon me.)
Eid Greetings: What to Say
When You Meet Someone:
Arabic:
"Eid Mubarak!" (Blessed Eid)
or
"Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum."
(May Allah accept from us and from you.)
Response:
"Minkum wa minna, Eid Mubarak."
(From you and from us, blessed Eid.)
or
"Ameen, wa antum fa jazakumullahu khayran."
(Ameen, and you too, may Allah reward you with goodness.)
In Your Language:
Any greeting that conveys well-wishes is fine.
"Happy Eid!" "May Allah accept your worship!" "Wishing you a blessed Eid!"
The Etiquette:
Smile. Hug (if appropriate). Genuine joy. This is celebration.
Zaynab told me: "I love the Eid greeting exchange. That moment of acknowledging we both just worshipped Allah. We both seek His acceptance. That mutual dua—'May Allah accept from us and you'—it's beautiful. We're praying for each other's acceptance."
During the Sacrifice (Qurbani)
Before Slaughtering
Face the Animal Toward Qiblah:
Lay it on its left side, facing Makkah.
The Dua:
"Bismillah, Allahu Akbar. Allahumma hadha minka wa laka, hadha 'anni [wa 'an fulaan - if sacrificing for others]."
Translation:
"In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is from You and for You. This is from me [and from so-and-so if on behalf of others]."
The Extended Version:
"Bismillahi wallahu Akbar. Allahumma minka wa laka, Allahumma taqabbal minni."
(In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, from You and for You, O Allah accept from me.)
After Slaughtering
Thank Allah:
"Alhamdulillahi alladhi razaqana hadha."
(All praise to Allah who provided us with this.)
Make Dua for Acceptance:
"Allahumma taqabbal minni kama taqabbalta min Ibraheem 'alayhis-salam."
(O Allah, accept from me as You accepted from Ibrahim, peace be upon him.)
According to Ibrahim, “As I sacrifice, I reflect on Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismail. That link – that I am contributing to his legacy – makes me emotional. The dua ‘accept from me as you have accepted from Ibrahim’ is very heavy. It means a lot. I am asking for acceptance as he was.”
Distributing the Meat
As You Distribute:
"Allahumma baarik lana fima razaqtana"
(Oh God, bless us in what You have bestowed upon us)
To those who receive
"Taqqabal allahu minna wa minkum"
(May God accept from both us and you)
In giving to the poor
"Sadaqatun lillahi ta’ala"
(Charity for the sake of the Most High)
or simply:
"Eid Mubarak, this is from our Qurbani."
Throughout Eid Day
Before Eating
Particularly Qurbani Meat:
"Bismillahi wa 'ala barakatillah."
(In the name of Allah and with the blessings of Allah.)
"Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana waqina 'adhaban-nar."
(O Allah, bless us in what You have provided us and save us from the punishment of the Fire.)
After Eating
"Alhamdulillahi alladhi at'amana wa saqana wa ja'alana muslimeen."
(All praise is to Allah who fed us and gave us drink and made us Muslims.)
When Meeting Relatives/Friends
Upon Entering a House:
"Bismillah, walajana, wa bismillah kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna."
(In the name of Allah we enter, and in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we place our trust.)
Before Sleeping on Eid Night
Gratitude for the Day:
"Alhamdulillahi alladhi hadana li hadha wa ma kunna linahtadiya lawla an hadanal-lah."
(All praise is to Allah who guided us to this and we would never have been guided if Allah had not guided us.)
"Allahumma taqabbal minna Eidan wa a'maalana."
(O Allah, accept from us our Eid and our deeds.)
Special Duas for Specific Situations
If You Couldn't Afford Sacrifice
Make This Dua:
"Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik."
(O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.)
"Allahummaarzuqni fi 'aamin qadimin an u'addi al-qurban."
(O Allah, provide for me to perform the sacrifice in the coming year.)
No Guilt:
Qurbani is only required if you have the means. If you don't, there's no sin.
If You're Sick or Sad on Eid
For Healing:
"Allahumma 'afini fi badani, Allahumma 'afini fi sam'i, Allahumma 'afini fi basari."
(O Allah, grant me health in my body. O Allah, grant me health in my hearing. O Allah, grant me health in my sight.)
For Comfort:
"Hasbiyallahu wa ni'mal-wakeel."
(Allah is sufficient for me, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.)
For Those Who Lost Loved Ones
Remember Them:
"Allahumma ighfir li [name] warhamhu."
(O Allah, forgive [name] and have mercy on him/her.)
"Allahumma anzilhu manzilan mubarakan wa anta khayrul-munzileen."
(O Allah, give him/her a blessed resting place, for You are the Best to provide such.)
Omar shared: "My first Eid without my father was hard. Everyone celebrating. I was grieving. I made dua for him throughout Eid. Asked Allah to accept his deeds. Grant him Jannah. Make his grave spacious. That dua gave me purpose. Yes, I was sad. But I could still worship. Still ask Allah to bless him."
General Eid Duas to Make Throughout the Day
- Dua for Acceptance:
"Allahumma taqabbal minna wa min jami'il-muslimeen."
(O Allah, accept from us and from all the Muslims.)
- Dua for the Ummah:
"Allahumma ahfazh al-muslimeena fi kulli makaan."
(O Allah, protect the Muslims in every place.)
- Dua for Family:
"Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa dhurriyyatina qurrata a'yun."
(Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes.)
- Dua for Forgiveness:
"Allahumma innaka 'afuwwun karimun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anna."
(O Allah, You are Pardoning and Generous, You love to pardon, so pardon us.)
- Dua for Next Year:
"Allahumma ballighna Eid al-Adha al-qadim wa nahnu fi afdali haal."
(O Allah, let us reach the next Eid al-Adha while we are in the best of states.)
Don't Forget: Dua in Your Language
Remember:
Allah understands all languages.
Make Personal Duas:
"Allah, thank You for this Eid. Thank You for my family. For food. For health. Please accept my sacrifice. Forgive my sins. Guide my children. Help the oppressed Muslims. Grant my parents Jannah."
Sincerity Over Language:
A heartfelt dua in your language beats a memorized Arabic dua you don't understand.
The Balance:
Learn the Arabic sunnah duas. But also make personal duas from your heart.
Fatima said: "I say the Arabic duas. But I also talk to Allah in English. 'Allah, thank You for this beautiful day. My kids are happy. We have food. We're together. Please keep us on Your path.' That mix—formal Arabic plus conversational English—that's my Eid worship."
Conclusion: Make Eid a Day of Worship Through Dua
Eid al-Adha isn't just eating and celebrating. It's worship.
The Duas:
- Takbeer (from 9th to 13th)
- Morning preparation duas
- Walking to prayer duas
- Eid greetings
- Sacrifice duas
- Eating duas
- Visiting duas
- Night duas
All of It:
Opportunities to remember Allah. To ask Him. To thank Him. To worship Him.
Don't Let Eid Pass:
Without making these duas. Without connecting to Allah through words.
The Takbeer Especially:
That's the defining dhikr of Eid al-Adha. Fill the days with "Allahu Akbar."
Make This Eid:
Not just a holiday. A spiritual high. A day of worship. A day of dua.
May Allah accept your Eid. May He accept your sacrifice. May He answer your duas.
And let every Eid draw you nearer to Him.
God is Great.
